Student Residence – Bloemfontein, Free State

This project involved the design and installation of a comprehensive solar energy system at a University of the Free State student residence in Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa.

Project Scope

  • 5 kWp photovoltaic (PV) solar system with battery backup for electricity generation
  • 18 kW thermal solar water heating system for domestic hot water supply

Project Outcomes

  • Significant reduction in grid electricity consumption at the residence
  • Reduced energy costs for the university
  • Demonstration of renewable energy viability in a student accommodation context
  • Reduction in carbon emissions associated with the facility

System Components

The PV system includes Tier-1 solar panels, a hybrid inverter enabling grid-tied operation with battery backup, and deep-cycle battery storage ensuring continued electricity supply during grid outages — a critical feature given South Africa's load-shedding challenges.

The thermal solar system uses evacuated tube collectors optimised for the Free State climate, with a pressurised backup element ensuring reliable hot water availability year-round.
